James Trevor Reid, a man who put family over everything else, died on Saturday, Sept. 14, and now the community is rallying around him, his girlfriend, and the unborn child he never had the opportunity to meet.
Reid, who was a popular player on the Spotsylvania Knights before assuming some coaching duties at his alma mater, died while riding his motorcycle and striking a truck driven by an 18-year-old.
"Trevor lived by the motto F.O.E (Family Over Everything) and cherished his siblings, nothing came before them," the 21-year-old's obituary reads.
"His unwavering dedication to his family was evident in all he did. Trevor's passion for football was unparalleled, particularly for the Spotsylvania Knights."
Friends and family recalled Reid spending Friday nights on the sidelines with his father, renowned coach Conway Reid, where he developed his love for the game and those closest to him.
According to his loved ones, Reid starred in football, basketball, and baseball during his time at Spotsylvania High School, before pursuing his passion while working at Vulcan Materials in Virginia.
When he wasn't on the gridiron or working to support his family, Reid was also known to enjoy fishing, hanging out with friends, the beach, attending his cousins’ sporting events, and supporting the Dallas Cowboys.
"Trevor’s larger-than-life personality was characterized by his kindness, humor, and selflessness," the obit continues. "His infectious smile brightened every room, and his presence will be profoundly missed. He was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his first child with his love, Iyana Lewis," for whom a fundraising campaign has been set up for.
Nearly $20,000 has been raised since Reid's death.
"Trevor’s departure leaves an unfillable void, but his memory and the love he shared will forever remain in our hearts."
On Friday, the Knights are expected to run a fundraiser of their own and to honor Reid during their next game - which falls on what would have been Reid's birthday.
"Please send your love, thoughts, and prayers for strength, healing, and peace to Coach Reid and his family," a friend posted social media. "Take the time to read about Trevor’s life, and support them in any way you can during this very difficult time."
Charles Lewis, the brother of Reid's girlfriend and expectant mother, described him as "a good one."
"This sweet boy has been a little brother to me my entire life (and) so happens to be my little sister Iyana boyfriend," he said. "I appreciate all of you guys for the call (and) text messages truly means a lot.
"I ask if you can keep the Reid family in your prayers along with my sister."
